Ways to learn irregular verbs in English

Today, the need for learning English is extremely high, because without knowledge and skills of its use it is impossible to do practically in any sphere of modern activity. But is it so easy to learn an unfamiliar language as soon as possible? This task is feasible if we move away from the stereotyped methods of study that are still practiced in many public and private educational institutions.

One of the most common problems when learning English is grammar. After all, the number of grammatical categories of time in English significantly exceeds the number of times in Russian, Ukrainian and related languages. What is only a table of irregular verbs, without the knowledge of which you will not be able to correctly build a single sentence in Past Simplein all times of the group Perfect, Passive Voice, Reported speech and others. Tables of irregular verbs are generally available - they can be purchased ready-made or simply downloaded on the Internet. Many textbooks already contain Lists of irregular verbs.

What are irregular verb tables?

The table data is a list of verbs that in English are not changed according to the rules. Such verbs you just need to know, because their change is not subject to absolutely no logic. The tables of irregular verbs, for the most part, are divided into 3 main columns:

  • infinitive (initial form) of the verb - Infinitive or base form
  • Past form - Past Simple
  • Past participant (3rd form of the verb)

Also, in such tables, a column with translation, and even transcription of verbs, is often added. Transcription is especially important for words whose reading can cause certain difficulties (for example, the verb read (infinitive) - read (Past Simple) does not change the spelling, but changes the reading of the letter combination “Ea” c [i:] to [e:]).

Of course, each verb can always be seen in the table, but still it is better to know them by heart, because at the right time (especially with an oral dialogue), the table may not be at hand.

It would seem - in the table there are a huge number of irregular verbs, how can we memorize everything?

Irregular Verb Learning Strategy

Absolutely in everything (language learning is no exception in this case) The key to success is consistency and strategy. A competent approach will ensure half the success. The second half is clearly considered your determination, desire and hard work.

The first step in this case should be a competent individual psychological approach to the student. Determine what type of perception you belong to. Recall that there are 4 types of perception: visual, auditory (auditory), kinesthetic, digital. If you are not familiar with such concepts, then it will not be difficult for you to find the relevant information on the Internet and familiarize yourself in more detail.

And so, based on how it is easier for you to remember the information coming from outside, we choose the methods of study.

Methods and techniques for memorizing irregular verbs with emphasis on the type of perception

The words in the tables of irregular verbs are divided according to the alphabetical order. The number of verbs that you plan to study at a time can be divided alphabetically or in any quantity convenient and feasible to you personally.
The number of words is chosen, then the main thing is to determine the most convenient and effective way of directly studying.

Visuals:

People who are dominated by the visual type of perception, in the study of verbs will help their visualization. You can buy or make different cards with verbs in different forms and create various games that contribute to memorization (you can mix and collect cards in the correct order by pronouncing the words themselves; you can draw on them what the student associates with a verb , and then remembering unfamiliar words will be even easier; you can colorize or print verbs on cards in different colors, etc.).

Another effective way is to watch various videos. There are a lot of such videos on the Internet - it remains only for your taste and color to choose the material that will provide the best result individually for you.

Another unusual and wonderful way that helps visuals to easily remember not only irregular verbs, but also new words in general, is to photograph them and set them as screensavers on the desktop of a smartphone or computer. Thus, every time you use these devices, words that you need to learn will pop up before your eyes.

Audiences:

Such people have good auditory memory, and therefore need to hear what needs to be remembered.
In mass access, there is a huge variety of audio recordings of irregular verbs, but you can record them yourself. We create a dictaphone record with the necessary number of verbs on the smartphone and listen to it at any convenient time. The advantage of this approach is that you can usefully take time on the way to the store, to work, university and other places that you regularly visit.

Verbs can be simply read out loud and then they will be remembered easier.

There are also many poems from the simplest to the more advanced. Such poems are based on irregular verbs. By reading them out loud over and over again, you bring the automatic memorization of irregular verbs closer.

Kinesthetics and Digital

Those with a predominantly kinesthetic type of perception feel a need to touch objects by touch. Because in our case, we are talking about verbs that are intangible, then the main goal becomes - to make them material. Digital people need consistency and consistency. Therefore, you can safely apply general methods and methods for training these two types.

Here, the same cards will come to the aid of kinesthetics and digitalians, on which the verbs themselves and associative rows of pictures with the image of objects and actions attached to the meaning of the verb itself can be written. You can also use objects that regularly catch your eye and associate them with the meaning of verbs (for example, "sneakers", you can associate with the verb run - ran - run. Each time, putting on sports shoes, you can repeat all 3 forms). In the same way, the meaning of words is attached to people (Masha is often thoughtful, we attach the verb to it think - thought - thought, every time at the sight of Masha an association arises and the word is quickly remembered).

There are a huge number of different ways to structured and competently approach the study of both English as a whole and its individual topics. It all depends on the ability to correctly approach learning and on the imagination and motivation of the student himself.
